Reflecting on the 5th Executive Summit – A Thriving Exchange for the Future of Automotive Manufacturing

Reflecting on the 5th Executive Summit – A Thriving Exchange for the Future of Automotive Manufacturing

Christian Kovacs

During the week of September 24-26, 2025, the 5th Executive Summit “CURRENT TRENDS AND CHALLENGES FACING AMERICAN AUTOMOTIVE BIW- METAL-FORMING”, co-organized with Fraunhofer USA, brought together an exceptionally diverse group of professionals from across the automotive landscape. Over three vibrant days, OEMs, Tier 1 suppliers, equipment providers, and industry consultants gathered to discuss pressing challenges, innovative solutions, and bold visions for the future of body-in-white production.

From the very beginning, the collaboration with Fraunhofer USA proved to be extraordinarily fruitful. A special word of gratitude goes to Dorothea, whose support and dedication were truly outstanding and instrumental to the success of the event.

Inspiring Presentations and Discussions

The program was packed with thought-provoking presentations, each sparking lively debate and fresh ideas. Highlights included:

  • Turning Research into Solutions with Russell Zarras (Fraunhofer USA)
  • Navigating the Crossroads for German Companies in the US with Britta Schneider (GACC Midwest)
  • Keynote: How New Technologies and AI are Transforming Automotive Manufacturing with Frank Schieck (Fraunhofer IWU)
  • Tariffs and Investment Outlook for the U.S. Automotive Industry with Jennifer Smith-Veluz (BUTZEL Consulting)

Equally compelling were the sessions on material, engineering, and process innovations, such as Sarah Tedesco’s deep dive into the integration challenges with Gen 3 steels, Patel Parth’s insights on ArcelorMittal’s new press-hardened steels, and Mohamed Mohamed’s perspectives on HFQ simulation methodologies.

In the quality assurance and assembly track, presentations by Bob Judkins (AutoForm Engineering), Michael Selent (SELMATEC Systems), and Clifford Butcher (University of Waterloo) highlighted how digitalization, adaptive monitoring, and simulation fidelity are redefining the way we think about production efficiency and accuracy.

Meanwhile, machines and equipment experts shared highly practical solutions, from Paul Thom’s compact rotation furnace concept to Benjamin Wilden´s novel thermal-inline-printer technology and Susan Rozak’s coated roller innovations.

Beyond the technical depth, several presentations stood out for their ability to deeply resonate with the audience. The contribution from Telos Global, delivered by Hassan Saadat, was particularly outstanding—an eye-opening and awakening call to rethink how we approach the rebuilding of skilled trades. Similarly, Gestamp’s session on Giga stampings demonstrated in a highly impressive way how complexity and costs can be reduced through innovative design and engineering. And not to be overlooked, Magna’s market overview and industry challenges presentation by Ryan Warpup provided a sharp, realistic, and forward-looking perspective on the evolving global automotive landscape.

The tools and automation sessions pushed the boundaries of process stability and advanced robotics, with particularly engaging talks by Lars Haubold (Fraunhofer USA) and Christopher Bajek (Fronius USA).

Workshops, Networking, and Company Visits

Hands-on workshops brought theory into practice. Michael Selent’s live presentation on PH-inspectors and Frank Schieck’s technology in application session gave participants direct insights into cutting-edge developments.

Beyond the formal agenda, the networking reception provided a wonderfully cheerful and relaxed atmosphere for forging new connections and strengthening partnerships.

We also had the unique privilege of visiting Andritz Schuler and ABB Robotics. Both company visits offered fascinating glimpses into groundbreaking innovations, advanced labs, and state-of-the-art training centers—further underlining the depth of expertise in our industry.

A Community Spirit at Automation Alley

The event was once again hosted at Automation Alley, whose team deserves heartfelt thanks for their warm hospitality and tireless support. Their friendliness and professionalism created an environment that made all participants feel truly welcome.

Looking Ahead

The feedback from participants has been overwhelmingly positive. Discussions were animated, the atmosphere was energetic, and the exchange of ideas was both inspiring and pragmatic. It became abundantly clear that our industry is at a turning point—facing immense challenges but also tremendous opportunities to rethink and restructure.

We are already working closely with our partners to design an even more compelling program for next year. Many exciting topic suggestions have been proposed, and we look forward to continuing this journey together.

The 5th Executive Summit was not just another industry event—it was a vivid testament to the power of collaboration, innovation, and community.
